 At the absolute center of the Network stands the Tree itself, and it is from here is where it is rumored that the Old and New Shadows originated from. All other worlds are connected through a corrupted branch or root connecting through time, space, dimensions. It does not exist in any ordinary year or on any map. The Umbra Tree occupies its own sealed dimension — a place outside normal time and space, reachable only through the deepest and most unstable root-paths. From this solitary point, every branch, every root, in every era ultimately draws its strength and direction. The Tree appears as a colossal, blackened silhouette against a sky that is neither day nor night. Its trunk is wider than any fortress. Its branches claw upward into a void that swallows light. Its roots plunge downward and outward in every direction at once, carrying pieces of every age the Network has ever touched. The air around it is unnaturally still. Sound behaves incorrectly. Time does not pass at a steady rate. Prolonged presence near the Tree is actively hostile to living minds and bodies. Common effects include: The longer one remains, the harder it becomes to remember why one came, or even who one was. The Tree does not hate intruders. It simply does not recognize them as separate from itself for very long. Because of this, the deepest paths that lead to the Tree are rarely used and almost never mapped. Most Rootwalkers consider reaching the nexus a last resort or a form of suicide. Those who return (and few do) are changed in ways that never fully heal... |
